"Cleaning an EWI or EVI"

Question: Hi, I'm the happy new owner of a used EWI1000/2000 setup - I'm just curious if I can clean out whatever chamber or cavity I'm blowing into? Is that possible?

Answer: You really don't need to clean out the breath chamber of an EWI1000.  The breath system on the 1000 is a closed system.  For that reason you blow into the EWI while allowing breath to escape from the sides of your mouth.  If you open the panel on the top of the EWI you will see the breath transducer and the connections to the mouthpiece which include the breath tube and the wires for the bite sensor.  If you observe corrosion on the breath transducer you should follow the steps necessary to alleviate that situation, but you don't really need to clean anything.

The breath system on the 3000 and 3020's has a pass through hole that allows air to run through the controller.  This tube does get spit in it but it is isolated from the functions of the breath transducer.  These newer controllers have several features which help prevent moisture damage.  One is the rubber sheath that is under the mouthpiece and the other is a solid state breath transducer.  So in general no cleaning is required other than wiping out any noticeable build up.

As for the outside of the instrument you can clean oil build up on the keys with rubbing alcohol.  The rubber ring gasket on the 1000's can use a little "Armor-All" to keep it soft.  Keep the alcohol off of any rubber parts.
